Innovation Challenge

Tackle a real problem. Pitch a real solution.

The Innovation Challenge is the hands-on heart of TYSIC. Students tackle real-world STEM problems through creative problem-solving and teamwork, then pitch their projects to a panel of judges. No experience required, just curiosity.

The idea

Where ideas become prototypes in a single day.

The Challenge gives every attendee a chance to do STEM, not just hear about it. Working in small teams, you'll move from a blank page to a pitch, supported by mentors and inspired by the day's speakers. It rewards bold thinking over polished résumés, which is exactly what makes it so memorable.

How it works

Four steps, one unforgettable day.

1

Form your team

Arrive solo or with friends, and we'll help you team up. Teams of 3-5 work best, mixing different strengths and interests. After you sign up, you will receive a form link to join a team.

2

Choose a problem

On the day, you'll receive a real-world STEM prompt. Pick the angle that excites your team the most. If you're doing the pre-day challenge (like previous years), you'll receive a prompt in advance and show up with a completed presentation and/or product.

3

Build your solution

Brainstorm, prototype, and shape your idea with guidance from mentors and the day's speakers.

4

Pitch to the judges

Present your concept to a panel of industry experts and researchers, and make your case.

What judges look for

No single right answer.

Judges aren't looking for the most complex build. They're looking for thoughtful, original ideas with real potential. Here's what stands out.

Creativity

Original thinking and a fresh angle on the problem.

Feasibility

A solution that could realistically take shape.

Impact

The potential to make a meaningful difference.

Teamwork & delivery

Clear collaboration and a compelling pitch.
